Mongolian President Leads Mission to Hong Kong
28 November 2013 – Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia, led a business delegation of more than 100 business and government officials to Hong Kong today, his first official visit to the city. Today, he attended a Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) luncheon organised to introduce Mongolia’s emerging opportunities to Hong Kong’s business community.
Largest Mongolian Mission
“This is the largest Mongolian delegation ever to Hong Kong,” said HKTDC Council Member and Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Ltd CEO Benjamin Hung, in welcoming the President and his mission members. The Mongolian contingent featured businesspeople from a broad range of sectors, including mining, construction, energy, finance, education and property. Hong Kong businesspeople in attendance came from the logistics, infrastructure, construction, finance and manufacturing fields.
In his speech, the Mongolian president outlined the latest developments in Mongolia. Along with mining, he welcomed Hong Kong companies to explore opportunities in infrastructure, financial services and tourism.
Young Population
Mongolia’s GDP grew more than 12 per cent last year and was over 11 per cent through the first nine months of this year. The country, which became a WTO member in 1997, is enjoying a boom in mining and, with 70 per cent of the population under 35, offers significant potential for Hong Kong business.
Following the luncheon, the HKTDC and the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed an MOU designed to strengthen economic and trade ties between the two economies. InvestHK and Invest Mongolia also signed an MOU designed to boost investment between Mongolia and Hong Kong.
