Asia’s Largest Lighting Fair Opens Today in Hong Kong
27 October 2010 – The HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) opened today with a record 2,028 exhibitors from 35 countries and regions, the strongest showing yet for the largest exhibition of its kind in Asia.
Also ranked as the world’s second-biggest lighting event, the fair continues through 30 October at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and will welcome 69 buying missions from 60 countries and regions. The groups include more than 5,000 buyers and nearly 3,500 companies from around the world.
The fair will also welcome first-time exhibitors from Australia, Bahrain, Bermuda, Canada, Egypt, Greece, Russia, Samoa and South Africa. Major exhibit categories at the event will include LED lighting, commercial and household lighting as well as green lighting, outdoor lighting, and lighting management, design and technology.
Green Theme
Benjamin Chau, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC said the event returns with a strong environmental direction the entire industry is taking.
“Going green is the trend, and visitors will see that theme reflected in the new LED and Green Lighting Zone,” said Mr Chau, adding that the newly combined space has attracted more than 760 exhibitors. “This year’s fair features a wide variety of energy-saving and environmentally-friendly products gathered under one roof. Also returning after a successful debut last year is the Hall of Aurora, which focuses on branded lighting. The hall will bring in plenty of inspiration as well as business opportunities,” said Mr Chau.
The Hall of Aurora will showcase more than 380 quality brands from 27 countries and regions. Among the brands are renowned names such as AAG Stucchi, Bright, Citizen, CREE, Everlight, Fulham, MEGAMAN, Midea, Neo-Neon, OSRAM, Philips, Royal Doulton and Searchlight International.
Lighting the Future
The Autumn Edition is also serving as a platform for information exchange, hosting topical discussions in forums such as workshops on the development, innovation and design as well as regulatory issues relating to LED lighting.
Bright lights from the industry will also participate in events. Representatives from OSRAM, Beghelli, OptiLED and Philips will discuss solid state lighting and energy saving at the seminars on opening day. Regulatory requirements for LED and CFL lighting products will be the focus of two 29 October workshops, and renowned building lighting designer Tino Kwan will host a sharing session on 28 October.
Illuminating the industry’s growing focus on design, the fair will also stage the 4th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition. Winning entries in both the student and open groups will be on display throughout the fair, showcasing the talents of Hong Kong’s young and up-and-coming designers.
Adding to the sourcing opportunities at the fair are concurrent events taking place this week. Underway at AsiaWorld-Expo is Sports Source Asia (27-29 October) and the HKTDC Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair (27-30 October). Both are organised by the HKTDC and, in the case of SSA, in partnership with MMI Asia Pte Ltd (MMI).
The lighting industry in Hong Kong is growing rapidly. Last year the city imported some HK$8.8 billion (US$1.1 billion) worth of lighting products, with the United States, the Chinese mainland, Japan, Germany and France the top markets. In the first eight months of this year, exports were up 16 per cent from the same period last year to HK$6.4 billion (US$818 million) and imports rose by 16 per cent to HK$5 billion (US$663 million).
