Stephen Fry: Humour Should Transcend Language at Book Fair
28 June 2010 – Internationally celebrated actor and writer Stephen Fry says his style of humour should strike a chord at the open forums he will join with other British authors next month in Hong Kong as part of the 21st edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, 21-27 July.
Mr Fry was interviewed in London by entrepreneur and author Sir David Tang ahead of the Hong Kong Book Fair, and their chat is now available on the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) webcast service at www.youtube.com/hktdc.
“I think most human beings have the full range of emotions, and I think it is a fallacy to imagine that language constrains, confines – or indeed, if you like, is the parent of any modes of thought,” said Mr Fry in the 17 June interview.
Mr Fry, who will join fellow authors Frederick Forsyth and Andrew Roberts at the forums moderated by Sir David, also said he hopes to read excerpts from his upcoming memoirs, which cover his Cambridge University years, when he met his long-time friend and collaborator actress Emma Thompson. The book is due to be released in September.
Public Forums
The Book Fair, organised by the HKTDC, will feature some 200 cultural events under the theme “Reading the World, Writing the Future.” In addition to the forums, the Book Fair itself is attracting other notable English-language authors, including British poet and literary critic James Fenton and children’s novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz.
The city’s own literary talent will also shine, with appearances by New York-born, Hong Kong-raised novelist Andrew Xia Fukuda and novelist Xu Xi, a Chinese-Indonesian native of Hong Kong and writer-in-residence at City University of Hong Kong’s Department of English. The four authors will each host a seminar at the fair, and some of the authors will be speaking in HKTDC webcast interviews in the coming weeks.
