Hong Kong Fashion Designers in the Spotlight in Tokyo
14 May 2017 – Four young Hong Kong designers were showcased in Tokyo’s famed fashion centres of Harajuku and Shinjuku this month after being invited to join pop-up events at the Japanese department store Laforet Harajuku, home to many popular women's labels, and by the select shop destination Tokyo in Shinjuku.
Laforet Harajuku’s Hong Kong fashion pop-up event is underway 8-18 May, and features designer Polly Ho’s label LOOM LOOP, Kenson Tam’s namesake label KENSON, and BLIND by JW, a brand created by Jessica Lau and Walter Kong. From 8-17 May, destination Tokyo is hosting the designs of LOOM LOOP and Mae Kwan’s brand MASE.
The origin of these events is connected with the October 2016 Fashion Hong Kong Group Show at Shibuya’s Hikarie during Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO 2017 Spring/ Summer. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the show attracted the attention of the Japanese fashion industry, and buyers from Laforet Harajuku and destination Tokyo who were intrigued by Hong Kong’s designer brands. The two companies subsequently attended Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter in January 2017 and identified more Hong Kong young designer labels, which paved the way for the two events now underway.
Committed to promoting Hong Kong’s fashion industry, the HKTDC has been organising international fashion fairs in Hong Kong, as well as leading local designers abroad for shows and events such as Tokyo Fashion Week.
The HKTDC also organises CENTRESTAGE, the fashion promotion and launch platform which takes place 6-9 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The event showcases Asian as well as international fashion labels and designers as well as underscores Hong Kong’s position as regional fashion capital. The final competition of the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest 2017 (YDC) will also be held during CENTRESTAGE.
