Bangkok, 28 September 2016 – The Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Economic Cooperation mechanism and the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) are refining the supply chain network in Asia. Meanwhile, e-commerce is creating opportunities for businesses in the region to expand their footprints. To tap into these opportunities, Hong Kong’s sophisticated and world-class logistics services can help. This will be one of the thematic topics to be discussed at the “In Style • Hong Kong” symposium to be held on 6 October at Plaza Athenee Bangkok organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).
Boosting business expansion
The logistics industry is a pillar of Hong Kong’s externally-oriented economy, and many industry-leading companies based in Hong Kong have been making their mark in Thailand and the ASEAN region.
For decades, Hong Kong has maintained its position as one of the world’s leading trade and logistics hubs, connecting Hong Kong and Greater China with the rest of the world. More recently, Hong Kong’s logistics industry is engaging with companies in Thailand to enhance distribution of Thai products, particularly to the Chinese mainland as well as to markets across Southeast Asia and even domestically.
“Hong Kong’s logistics companies are famous for the quality of their service, their speed and understanding of how to generate successful distribution in China,” said Sunny Chau, Director, Thailand, HKTDC. “Thai companies will benefit by engaging Hong Kong-based logistics companies to access the China market – as well as for their very strong capabilities in the ASEAN region and very strong capabilities within Thailand.”
Hong Kong’s logistics companies have set the standard for the industry in many parts of the world. With promise of guaranteed one-day delivery to anywhere in the Kingdom, Hong Kong’s logistics providers are an indispensable part of doing business in Thailand.
Like many industries, Hong Kong’s logistics industry relies on Hong Kong’s business- friendly infrastructure. Hong Kong has developed a talent pool of highly qualified logistics and supply chain professionals and put in place a regulatory environment that makes Hong Kong an appealing logistics hub for companies around the world.
Kerry Logistics – From Greater China to Southeast Asia
Kerry Logistics is a leader in Hong Kong’s logistics industry, and the company’s operations span six continents providing supply chain and logistics expertise and services to the world’s leading companies.
Kerry Logistics began its business in Thailand in 2002 by offering sophisticated logistics and supply chain solutions; Kerry has since developed the largest distribution network in the ASEAN region. In Thailand, Kerry Logistics ships nearly all major Thai exports – including electronics, automotive components, food products and garments, among others to destinations around the world. Domestically, the company has gained favor through its guarantee of one-day delivery anywhere within the country.
“Thailand’s manufacturing industry was a great starting point for us in the region,” said Alex Ng, Director and General Manager, Kerry Express. “We now ship a huge variety of goods within Thailand as well as across borders. We ship all of the leading Thai exports; including tremendous amounts of goods domestically and work with many of the leading e-commerce platforms. There is so much potential in Thailand and the region – and as the AEC develops, the opportunity will grow even larger.”
Lalamove – e-solutions for effective logistics
Lalamove is a relative newcomer to the logistics industry, but has quickly made a big impact as a tech-savvy logistics service provider. The company embraces technology – and the benefits it brings to the logistics business, including instant order matching, GPS vehicle tracking, online driver and service ratings and cashless payment options.
Lalamove’s business began as a mobile platform to connect customers needing delivery service with independent delivery operators. The business quickly caught on among customers for its customer service and cost efficiency. Today, Lalamove has the largest transportation fleet in Asia, and now connects customers with professional van, motorcycle, truck and lorry drivers.
In 2014, Lalamove entered the Thai market. “We are now in a mobile-first, digitally driven world – and Lalamove is embracing the power of the Internet to give Thai people better delivery service for less,” said Nattee Tangratchataaree, Vice President of Sales, Lalamove Thailand. “We are a leader in the on-demand delivery in Thailand, and we are eagerly anticipating the opportunities that the AEC may bring to our business. We believe Thai e-commerce companies are among the best in the region, and as demand for their products grows, so too will our opportunities.”
