Hong Kong Movies On Show In Cannes
11 May 2016 – A clutch of top Hong Kong movies, led by 2016’s award-winning Port of Call, are to be showcased at the Marché du Film, the world’s largest film market. France’s premier movie market opens today (11 May) and continues through 20 May. Marché du Film is part of the concurrent 69th Festival de Cannes (Cannes Film Festival).
This year, the Hong Kong Pavilion includes five Hong Kong exhibitors organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), namely, All Rights Entertainment Ltd, China 3D Digital Distribution Company Ltd., Fortune Star Media Ltd., Marvel Digital Productions Limited and Young Live Entertainment (HK) Co., Ltd. Another 10 Hong Kong companies will showcase their latest productions and seek business and partnership opportunities through their individual stands or offices at Marché du Film.
Hong Kong’s pivotal film factor
“The movies on display and companies at the Hong Kong Pavilion reflect how close Hong Kong is to the leading edge of the international film business, and they are a credit to the continuing vibrancy and creativity at the heart of the regional film industry,” said Jenny Koo, Director of Service Promotion, HKTDC. She added that Hong Kong’s close connection with the Chinese mainland – currently viewed as the world’s second-largest movie revenue generator after the United States – and extensive international interface, offer clear advantages to the global film industry. “Hong Kong’s familiarity with the mainland, together with the city’s production, financing, distribution and marketing expertise offer a perfect pivot for film companies to enter China and the region,” said Ms Koo.
Screen scene
Besides Port of Call, which won seven awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards 2016, several other Hong Kong companies will screen their latest offerings at Marché du Film between 11 May and 17 May. They include Bounty Hunters, Keeper of Darkness, The Bodyguard and The Weaving of a Dream: Johnnie To’s Vision and Craft.
Value-added services
The Hong Kong Pavilion at the International Village of Marché du Film serves as a business centre. It offers registered Hong Kong participants free business facilities.
A “Dim Sum Hour” session will be held at the business centre, starting at around noon on 13 May, offering networking opportunities for invited film industry professionals.
