8,300+ Attend “In Style • Hong Kong” On First Day
18 September 2015 – More than 8,300 people participated on the first day of “In Style • Hong Kong” in Jakarta, Indonesia, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).
A business symposium and expo are highlight events of the “In Style • Hong Kong” promotion at the Jakarta Convention Center. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) CY Leung officiated at the opening ceremony and attended last night’s “In Style • Hong Kong” gala dinner. Indonesia’s Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, was also guest of honour at the gala dinner.
Speaking at the gala dinner, Mr Leung said “In Style • Hong Kong” highlighted the best of Hong Kong’s creative, trendsetting and design-driven advantages. “And that’s what “In Style • Hong Kong” is all about. It's why the Hong Kong Trade Development Council put together this gala evening; why it organised the lifestyle product expo on show through Saturday, the citywide "In Style • Hong Kong" promotion, today's [yesterday’s] well-attended business symposium and much more. It's why I'm here in Jakarta with you,” said Mr Leung.
HKTDC Chairman Vincent HS Lo said: “We continue to celebrate the spirit of cooperation and business entrepreneurship.”
The gala dinner included a “Batik Crossover” fashion parade, with Hong Kong designers creating pieces using traditional batik fabric. “This ‘Batik Crossover’ symbolises the friendship between Hong Kong and Indonesia and demonstrates what can be achieved when Indonesia and Hong Kong meet,” Mr Lo said.
Hong Kong’s services advantages spotlighted
The day-long services symposium (17 September) featured heavyweight speakers, including Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR, Rimsky Yuen SC; Armando Tolomelli, CEO of Prada Asia Pacific; YK Pang, Director, Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd; Royce Yuen, Founder & CEO of New Brand New Ltd and Kent Wong, Managing Director, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd. More than 2,000 people attended the symposium.
As well as the main symposium, five thematic sessions were held to highlight ways Hong Kong services, including financial services, legal and arbitration, design and branding services, digital marketing and ICT services can help Indonesian companies expand their business in Asia, and especially the Chinese mainland.
Free on-site services consultations
The symposium also featured a mini-exhibition where 18 Hong Kong services providers and trade organisations provided on-site business consultations. The CreateSmart Initiative*, administered by Create Hong Kong of the HKSAR Government, sponsors the participation of some of these exhibitors from various creative sectors in the symposium and their market visit in Jakarta today.
Product expo features lifestyle themes
The “In Style • Hong Kong” branded product expo at the Jakarta Convention Center also opened yesterday and continues through tomorrow (19 September). About 5,700 Indonesian trade buyers, importers, distributors, retailers, brand agents, franchisees, department stores and specialist vendors attended the expo yesterday, where more than 190 participating companies are presenting Hong Kong lifestyle products in four major themed zones. The zones are fashion and fashion accessories, jewellery and watches, gifts and houseware, and consumer electronics. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Design Award Display Zone, titled “Fame. In Style” is showcasing a range of award-winning products to celebrate Hong Kong’s creative and design capabilities. Buyers can place low-volume orders of five to 1,000 pieces at the hktdc.com Small Orders display.
Gala Dinner spectacular
An invitation-only gala dinner, held last night at the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, welcomed about 500 business leaders from Indonesia and Hong Kong.
During the gala dinner, guests were treated to a parade of stunning fashion designs under the theme of “Batik Crossover”, which symbolises the cultural and creative links between Hong Kong and Indonesia. The “Batik Crossover”, sponsored by leading Indonesian textile and garment company Sritex, features six batik-themed fashion collections by renowned Hong Kong designers; Lulu Cheung, Walter Kong and Jessica Lau, Walter Ma, Aries Sin, Harrison Wong and Cecilia Yau. The collections are on display at the Skybridge in the Grand Indonesia Shopping Town until 20 September as part of the “In Style • Hong Kong” citywide promotion.
“To try to understand their fabric is one of the important things. So that’s why this time we have some crossover projects, using their batik and turning it into a modern garment. I think it’s fun,” said Mr Wong, who is also an expo exhibitor. “I came here to see the potential in the city … to see how people are dressed, and what this market is like. I also want to find potential buyers.”
Citywide promotion draws Indonesian consumers
The centerpiece of the citywide promotion is a Hong Kong galleria at the Skybridge in the Grand Indonesia Shopping Town (14-20 September), where consumers can get a taste of unique Hong Kong fashion, food and lifestyle products.
The public can also take advantage of a “Hong Kong Gourmet” campaign, with a webpage launched on OpenRice Indonesia’s portal featuring more than 10 Hong Kong-style restaurants in Jakarta. The “OpenSnap Photo Competition” (www.opensnap.com/hktdc) is also being organised to encourage patrons to dine at participating restaurants.
Indonesian-operated bistro chain Hong Kong Cafe is offering a three-course gourmet menu created by Hong Kong celebrity chef Walter Kei for “In Style.Hong Kong”. Dim sum specialist Tim Ho Wan is offering complimentary desserts while traditional Hong Kong-style milk tea is also available at the Chatime Indonesia takeaway beverage chain. The tea is brewed using blended tea leaves sponsored by Hong Kong beverage company Kampery.
Meanwhile, a “Hong Kong Lifestyle Products” promotion is under way in Jakarta, with Hong Kong fashion brands such as G2000, Giordano and Staccato offering discounts and other consumer incentives.
