Fred Lam leaves the HKTDC on 30 September after serving the Council in various capacities for 28 years

23 September 2014 – More than 600 government officials and business leaders attended a cocktail reception yesterday (22 Sept) in honour of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s (HKTDC) outgoing Executive Director Fred Lam, who will leave the Council at the end of this month. Representing the HKSAR Government, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So and Secretary for Development Paul Chan joined the reception which was held the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

HKTDC Chairman Jack So thanked Mr Lam for his contributions to the Council during his 28 years of service. “As an Executive Director, Fred has led the HKTDC to become one of the top trade promotion organisations in the world. He is dedicated to serving small and medium-sized enterprises by helping them to expand their business globally, especially the Chinese mainland market.”

Mr So noted that Mr Lam had spearheaded the Atrium Link extension of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre which was completed in 2009, enabling local fairs to expand. Currently, nine HKTDC fairs are the largest of their kind in Asia, and three are the world’s largest. “Fred has also transformed some of the traditional sourcing fairs into marketing platforms for new products. This evolution is crucial in enhancing Hong Kong’s position as the trade fair capital of Asia,” Mr So said.

Mr Lam joined the HKTDC in 1986, and has held several directorate posts. He was promoted to Deputy Executive Director in 1993 and appointed Executive Director in May 2004. Mr Lam resigned in June. He will take up the post of Chief Executive Officer of the Airport Authority Hong Kong on 1 October.

Fred Lam played a leading role in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre expansion project which was completed in 2009. The expansion project added 42 per cent more exhibition space to the HKCEC and heralded a new era for conferences and exhibitions in Hong Kong, with several fairs expanding to become the largest events of their kind in the world

In 2003, the HKTDC rose to the economic challenge posed by the outbreak of SARS by organising supplementary fairs to minimise the economic impact from SARS on local exporters.
