34th Hong Kong Book Fair opens tomorrow
Three summer cultural and leisure events attract 760 exhibitors to participate
16 July 2024 – The 34th Hong Kong Book Fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be held from 17 to 23 July (Wednesday to Tuesday) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), together with the HKTDC Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo and the HKTDC World of Snacks. A total of 760 exhibitors will be participating in these three summer cultural and leisure events.
The opening ceremony for the fairs will be held on the morning of the first day (17 July) to kick off the seven-day exhibition period, with Raistlin Lau, Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, as guest of honour.
The Book Fair has chosen Film and Television Literature as its theme of the year with the tagline Reading the World: Storytelling from Page to Screen to encourage booklovers to appreciate the joy of reading through both literature and film. The highly anticipated Art Gallery will be divided into three major thematic zones, focusing on the Featured Writers of the Year, Featured Directors and Classic Literary Adaptations, each featuring exhibitions of related works. The World of Art & Culture returns to the fair, gathering exhibits from around the world and featuring an interactive artificial intelligence (AI) installation where visitors can input specific keywords to generate different scenes from classic films.
The Book Fair's Eight Seminar Series covers Theme of the Year, Renowned Writers, English and International Reading, World of Knowledge, Children and Youth Reading, Hong Kong Cultural and Historical, Lifestyle and Personal Development and Spiritual Growth, inviting heavyweight Chinese writers and renowned writers from around the world to share their creative journeys. There will be more than 600 activities inside and outside the exhibition, providing diverse programmes for booklovers. In addition, the second day of the Book Fair (18 July) will feature the first IP Roundtable, inviting representatives from the international publishing and copyright industries to discuss the challenges and opportunities brought by the rapid development of AI to the commercialisation of IP copyright. (For details of the seminars and participating writers, please visit: https://hkbookfair.hktdc.com/en/Events/Event-Schedule.html.)
Riding on Olympics fever, the Sports and Leisure Expo has invited the Hong Kong Sports Institute (Booth 5C-C02) to set up a mosaic photo wall at the venue, collecting photos of visitors to cheer on the Hong Kong athletes preparing for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. The Sports Hub zone has a newly added parent-child zipline activity from the Hong Kong Playground Association (Booth 5C-D02), offering exciting experiences for visitors. At the World of Snacks, meanwhile, more than 1,200 different kinds of snacks have been sourced, presenting classic flavours, healthy options and taste sensations from around the world.
