Prospering on a decade of collaboration, esteemed speakers will unveil opportunities

12 September 2023 – The eighth Belt and Road Summit, jointly organised by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will take place physically at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) tomorrow and on Thursday (13 and 14 September). Over 90 government officials and business leaders from countries and regions along the Belt and Road, as well as project owners, investors and service providers from around the world, will gather to review Belt and Road Initiative achievements over the past decade and explore investment and business opportunities while showcasing Hong Kong's unique advantages to the global community.

Under the theme Prospering on a Decade of Collaboration, the Summit continues to serve as a vital platform for business exchange related to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). John Lee, Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government, will deliver welcoming remarks at the Opening Session while Dr Peter K N Lam, Chairman of the HKTDC, will give an opening address. Zheng Yanxiong, Deputy Director, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and Director, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Guo Tingting, Vice Minister, Ministry of Commerce, the People’s Republic of China; Gou Ping, Vice Chairman, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, the People’s Republic of China; and Xiao Weiming, Deputy Secretary General, National Development and Reform Commission, the People’s Republic of China, will deliver special addresses, while Arman Shakkaliyev, Minister of Trade and Integration, Kazakhstan; and Rizal Affandi Lukman, Special Staff to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Indonesia, will deliver the Keynote Address.

The subsequent Policy Dialogue will focus on Tapping into the Potential of the Middle East and Belt and Road Initiative as a Catalyst for Regional Cooperation and Development. These two sessions will be chaired by Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the HKSAR, and Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR, respectively. Discussions will centre around cooperation among countries and regions along the Belt and Road. Prominent guest speakers will include Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, United Arab Emirates; Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation of Egypt; Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hungary; Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment, Vietnam; and Mohamad Bin Alamin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia.

Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, will address the Keynote Luncheon on the first day, themed Resiliency and Development on Entering a New Era of the Belt and Road Initiative.

On the second day of the Summit, a dedicated Middle East Forum will debut to build on the achievements of the HKTDC's Middle East mission earlier this year. The forum will focus on exploring opportunities, developments and collaborations in the Middle East market under the BRI, aiming to deepen cooperation between the two regions. The Summit will also introduce the Finance Chapter and Youth Chapter. The Finance Chapter will explore Hong Kong's excellent financial services, while the Youth Chapter will invite young business leaders and start-up entrepreneurs to share insights on exploring and seizing new opportunities under the BRI.
